As government economic planners along with private sector actors mapped out Mindanao’s agricultural directions last week at a major expo here, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte bared her own programs aiming to transform the city into a major agricultural producer.
Mayor Duterte opened the Davao Trade Expo 2010 with Robert Quinto, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc.; and members of the Federation of Chamber of Commerce in Mindanao, which organized the 3-day event held at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, where Mindanao products were displayed for world buyers to explore.
A highlight of the expo was the First Global Banana Summit, which placed at center stage the Davao Region’s banana industry, the third biggest world producer of Cavendish bananas.
Duterte said Date 2010 and the banana summit augurs well for the banana industry’s continuing growth.
This is perfect opportunity for us to come together and discuss production, exportation and sharing of new techniques to be able to push the Philippines especially Mindanao to move forward and bring it up to be at par with the rest of the world, she told the participants in her opening speech.
Interviewed later, Duterte said the city’s agri-program would focus on identification of areas for specific products, like converting upland Marilog and Paquibato districts into a fruit bowl.
She also plans to undertake agro-forestry projects like production of rubber in hinterland districts; and transform part of the city’s coastal areas into mariculture parks.
