Samal Island RoRo nearing completion

The P37 million Tagpopongan Roll On Roll Off (RoRo) Port in the Island Garden City of Samal is now 50 percent completed, said the Philippine Ports Authority Port District Office-Southern Mindanao (PPA PDO-SoMin) Engineering Services Division (ESD).

Built by MRB Construction and Supply (MRBCS) with a 430-day work schedule, the port would be completed by August, said ESD manager Asterio Gallardo Jr.

The Election Ban starting on February 12, 2010 and the President Benigno Aquino’s Suspension Order 01 for all Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) infrastructure projects beginning on July 21, 2010, had stalled early completion of the project, said Gallardo, but adding the project is on stream.

The twin RoRo ports form part of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) project of the national government.

Meanwhile, the Pantukan RoRo Port in Compostela Valley across Tagpopongan, is being hobbled by road-right-of-way woes now being resolved by the local government, causing delay, said Gallardo.

The two ports are expected to speed up transport of goods, people and services between the two municipalities faster.
