TOURISM HAMPERED BY POWER LACK IN IGACOS CITY

By Mai Gevera

Electricity remains a big hurdle in maximizing the tourism potentials of the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS).

IGaCoS Vice Mayor Al David Uy bared the local government’s difficulties in luring more investors in the city as most of the private businesses that opened in the island became hesitant to expand their investment due to the power problems.

The island’s power is being distributed by the Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative which according to Uy is having difficulties in keeping up to the power demand of the entire island and even to two other provinces which have the same franchise to the mentioned electric company.

Uy admitted that the state of power in the island positioned the city as hostaged by the said power utility distributor.

“It is only very recent that DANECO has become open in accepting some of our suggestions and recommendations.” Uy said.

One of the solutions thought by the local government is for DANECO to have a joint partnership with the more stable power distributor Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC), the company that supplies power to Davao City and Panabo City or total  buy-out by the DLPC.
