Davao del Norte Provincial Governor Rodolfo has proposed a ferry system between Davao City and the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCos) to declog vehicular traffic along the route from the mainland to the island city.
The ferry system should connect all provinces in the Davao Region, said del Rosario.
“To ease up the traffic, we must use the sea highway, our sea is so open. Samal is in the middle of the Davao Gulf,” he said.
As the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) XI is set to improve the ports in Pantukan and Maco of Compostela Valley, Del Rosario pointed out the need to explore sites for a roll-on roll-off port along the coast of Panabo, Carmen, and Tagum.
He revealed bringing a proposal in the recent meeting of the Regional Development Council (RDC) for PPA XI to develop a ferry port either in Panabo, Carmen, or Tagum.
RDC supported his proposal by way of a resolution as he pointed out the importance of such port to provide access for Davao del Norte residents to go to the island city without necessarily going to Davao City.
IGaCoS is one of three component cities of Davao del Norte but it can only be reached through taking a ferry ride at Davao City ports.
“We will end up not reaching our own place. Why can’t we do it in the coastal area of Davao del Norte,” he said as he noted that neighboring the province of Compostela Valley already have ports for ferry taking a route to IGaCos.
