Even as he would sit on thin air without a committee chairmanship, a Davao City councilor is unfazed standing firm that he is not involved in extorting property developers seeking legislative approval of business ventures from the local legislative body.
I am innocent, said councilor Nilo Abellera, Jr, who has been defrocked of his chairmanship of the committee on trade and commerce, and membership in other committees, by no less than Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte following allegations he shook down an investor to cough up money in echange for approval of an application.
I can still work without a committee, said Abellera in a privilege speech last week where he challenged the council’s ethics body to conduct an investigation to dig deep into his alleged involvement in the extortion.
Councilor Melchor Quitain, chair of the ethics body, has thrown the burden to the council as a body to decide on whether or not to proceed with the investigation.
Quitain said there is no witness or complainant against Abellera.
Duterte could stand as potential witness against Abellera. Duterte reportedly disrobed Abellera of his chairmanship during a closed-door executive session with the councilors, reportedly over the alleged extortion of the councilor.
