BY ROGER M. BALANZA
Who says the Philippine National Police frowns on gays. The highest ranking gay in the police force is a colonel, said the head of a gay group accredited as a partylist by the Commission on Elections.
There are also gay senators, congressmen and mayors, the officer said as if to illustrate how gayness has already become an institution, albeit discreetly, in Philippine society.
Twenty-two officers in the Philippine National Police are LGBT members, Ang Ladlad national chairperson Bemz Benedito said on Friday.
“Sa mga bakla, mayroon tayong miyembrong 14 ngayon tapos sa mga lesbiyana may mga 8 tayo,” said Bendito, a transgender. The group believes there are more LGBTs in the PNP, but they have not revealed themselves.
