The Hugpong ng Pagbabgo (HNP) will field a Davao Region-wide slate in the 2019 midterm elections.

HNP, a regional party formed by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, was expected to name its candidates soon ahead of the October 2018 filing of Certificates of Candidacy (CoC).

In Davao del Norte, HNP would field a slate against candidates of the administration party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), according an HNP insider.

The insider privy to political goings-on in HNP but who asked anonymity, said the HNP slate would battle it out against the “Alvarez wing” of the PDP-Laban.

By “Alvarez wing” the insider was referring to the slate that would be put up by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.

HNP is luring former Governor  Rodolfo del Rosario to run against Alvarez, reports said.

Duterte has vowed to campaign against the reelection of Alvarez (DavNor, First District), after the Speaker described the HNP as an “opposition party.”

Alvarez, secretary general of the PDP-Laban, was expected to organize a “weak” line-up for the 2019 polls, as a result of the formation of the HNP and his row with Mayor Duterte, said the insider.

Top Davao Region officials from governors down to the municipal and city levels have resigned from PDP-Laban to join Duterte’s HNP.

Other than Duterte, the convenors of HNP are Davao del Norte Governor Anthony del Rosario, Davao del Sur Governor Douglas Cagas, Davao Occidental Governor Claude Bautista, Davao Oriental Governor Nelson Dayanghirang and Compostela Valley Governor Tyron Uy.
