INDAY SARA WING VS. ALVAREZ WING IN DAVNOR 2019 POLLS
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio will be the campaign manager of the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HnP) when the regional party goes into battle in the 2019 mid-term election, a party insider said.
HnP, founded by Duterte-Carpio, is envisioned to galvanize political leaders of the Davao Region into a strong unified voice in politics, governance and economic development.
The HnP is chaired by presidential daughter Duterte-Carpio and counts the Davao Region’s five governors as founding members.
The freshly-minted regional party will test this unity when it goes into politics and join the 2019 election for its first major undertaking since its founding early this year.
The HnP insider speculated that Duterte-Carpio leading HnP as campaign manager, informally agreed upon during a recent HnP event in Tagum City, could be tied to her earlier vow to frustrate the reelection bid of Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, who represents Davao del Norte’s 1st District in Congress.
The insider who asked anonymity confirmed earlier reports that the HnP is fielding a full regional slate in next year’s polls.
Alvarez, the secretary general of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), has organized a separate bloc called the PDP-Laban Alvarez Wing that was expected to battle it out with the HnP slate.
Initially, the Alvarez Wing has Vice Governor Allan Dujali contesting the reelection of Governor Anthony del Rosario but has not yet named its candidate against Second District Congressman Anthony del Rosario.
The HnP is choosing between former Governor Rodolfo del Rosario and Alvarez’s estranged wife Emily as its candidate against the Speaker. The HnP is also still looking for an opponent for Tagum City Mayor Alan Rellon, who has pitched camp with the Alvarez Wing.
The HnP will have in its slate the incumbent governors of the five provinces of the Davao Region: Anthony del Rosario (Davao del Norte), Jayvee Tyron Uy (Compostela Valley), Nelson Dayanghirang (Davao Oriental), Claude Bautista (Davao Occidental) and Douglas Cagas (Davao del Sur).
While Cong. Floirendo and the governors are expected to breeze through their reelection with ease, the excitement over the 2019 election will center on how Alvarez could survive the HnP onslaught with Duterte-Carpio as campaign manager.
Latest reports have it that former Governor del Rosario has already transferred residence from Igacos City in the Second District to Tagum City to qualify to run in Alvarez’s 1st District. The ex-governor will carry the banner of the HnP.
Earlier, Duterte-Carpio called Alvarez an “asshole” that the administration of his father President Rodrigo Duterte can do without, after the Speaker described HnP as an “opposition party.”
Badly hurt by the Speaker’s false accusation, Duterte-Carpio vowed to campaign against Alvarez’s reelection in 2019.
