MATI CITY PREPS UP FOR ‘THE BIG ONE’ WITH EARTHQUAKE DRILL

City Government of Mati will hold a city-wide earthquake drill on the morning of July 26, 2019 as part of the emergency preparedness program of the government.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), headed by Mati City Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat as chair, met on Friday, July 19, to discuss the preparations for the said drill. Called to attend the meeting were various stakeholders from the local government, the academe, various government and non-government agencies and the private sector.
in her administration’s 10-point agenda is emergency preparedness. Mayor Michelle said that the people of Mati must be ready for any calamity that might strike. She reminded the public that back in 1924, an 8.3 magnitude quake struck Mati that resulted to land displacement in Mati’s topography.
Just recently, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned of the possibility of “The Big One” to strike the Davao region should the Mati Fault move.
The 1924 quake did not cause much destruction back then as there were no tall and huge structures then. Phivolcs said that if the Big One strikes, several lives would be lost due to collapsed buildings and other structures plus the threat of a tsunami. Even if Mati would be the epicenter, Phivolcs said, they expect much more damage in Davao City as the land mass in Davao is softer compared to Mati City’s.
DRILL Mati City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Charlemagne Bagasol said that their earthquake drill will start off with a siren at exactly 8:30 in the morning that will last for one minute. Bagasol said that for the first minute of siren, everyone must perform the duck, hold, and cover. After the siren, evacuation will start with all emergency teams activated and deployed to all affected areas. At 8:35 am, another siren will go off indicating an aftershock.
Bagasol said that everyone, including the rescue and medical teams, must again perform the duck, hold and cover wherever they may be. SCENARIO The CDRRMO said that the scenario during the drill is that a 30-second quake with a magnitude of 8.3 and an intensity 8 would hit Mati City that would result to a tsunami with a wave height of 8.96 meters directly affecting the Barangay Central of Mati.
As a consequence, the tremor damaged residential houses, school facilities, government infrastructures and many fear-stricken Mati residents panicked which resulted to chaos and mass casualty injuries. RELOCATION Aside from earthquake drills, the City of Mati is also working on relocating people who live in identified “danger zone” areas.
Mayor Michelle said that her administration will give a financial assistance of P30,000 to each of the affected households. Residents are also encouraged to have an emergency bag fully equipped with first aid kit like flashlight, batteries, radio, clothes, canned goods, water and other essentials. (CIO MATI)
