587% increase in new cases (2007 – 2011) of HIV in the Philippines

There is an alarming rise of people who contracted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) said Department of Health (DOH). As of March 2012, there are over 9,000 reported cases of HIV. Rappler.com reports that there has been a 587% increase in the number of new cases of HIV in the Philippines from 2007 to 2011, according to Dr Genesis Samonte, chief of the HIV Surveillance Unit of the National Epidemiology Center (DOH-NEC).
