Gun ban in Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival 2012

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is set to ask anew the Philippine National Police (PNP) to impose a total gun ban when the city celebrates the Kadayawan Festival in August. But she is making sure that father Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte would not be raising a howl over the gun ban that he criticized when it was first imposed during the monthly-long celebration of the Araw ng Dabaw in March. The City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) chaired by the mayor has passed a resolution asking the PNP to issue an order on the August gun ban. In March, … Continue reading Gun ban in Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival 2012

The Seven Last Words

SWITCHBOARD By Roldan Gorgonio The last words of a person are his “exit lines” in this world when death, the inevitable is impending. A person’s body and soul can be bolting in struggle upon sensing the final ticking seconds of such looming extinction.     Death may come in so many forms but these last words are always expressed in “extremis” especially when recovery is already regarded as nil and hopeless. In that dreary sunset of life, those closest can only sigh but should take a good grip of the very precious parting words, in order to make them a living … Continue reading The Seven Last Words

Buying power of peso

Switchboard By Roldan Gorgonio If Mang Pandoy were still alive today, P-Noy might as well brag with him about the “statistics” of our country’s economy. The third president after Fidel Ramos when hit by his “noynoying” critics got more defensive: “I have the statistics”. P-Noy’s ineptitude to address the plight of the poor may spark more unrests, or worse, corrupt the people’s faith with Malacañang. Mang Pandoy (whose real name was Felipe Natanio) wore the “face of poverty” the national government was trying to give a lift. He got media attention upon braving to exposé the sufferings of the poor. … Continue reading Buying power of peso

Like a thief in the night

SWITCHBOARD By Roldan G. Gorgonio We consider Christmas as a celebration of the Lord’s birth. But for the worst typhoon-hit Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City, Christ may have come like a thief in the night. The least that we can do now is extend whatever help we can to the victims and their families. Sending help with dispatch for typhoon Sendong victims is the highest priority; second, the need for information dessimination. There must be a massive information drive about how climate change transforms any place in the country into a potential path of destruction. Like CDO and … Continue reading Like a thief in the night

Lessons from young journalists

SWITCHBOARD           Roldan G. Gorgonio Last November 28 marked my one decade stint as evaluator to the division and regional elementary and secondary schools press conferences. I had my first evaluation job in the 2001 RSSPC held at Sta. Ana National High School through the invitation of Ma’am Ursula C. Valderama, then Chief Secondary Education Division of DepEd. With that time stretch, I gathered wonderful memories with young student-journalists of this region, especially about their desires to become full-fledged members of the mainstream media someday. While my first love was writing, I also explored the world … Continue reading Lessons from young journalists

BARANGAY JUSTICE AT ITS BEST

SWITCHBOARD BY ROLDAN GORGONIO     When Barangay Sasa was declared this year’s over-all champion in the Lupong Tagapamayapa Incentives Awards, I think everybody was resolved that it deserved such recognition. The barangay has been a consistent winner in this contest, enjoying the reign and the comfortable lead for more than two years in a row. Garnering 92%, Barangay Sasa bested all the 181 barangays of this contest under the highly urbanized city category.  To complete the list, second place went to Barangay Panacan; third, Barangay Mintal; and fourth, Barangay 2-A in Poblacion District. However, the results have raised some speculations … Continue reading BARANGAY JUSTICE AT ITS BEST

Plastic-free Davao City

SWITCHBOARD by Roldan G. Gorgonio The months after July after the implementation of the Davao City Ordinance No. 0361-10 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Ordinance of 2009, Cenro and the deputized enforcers of the barangays have apprehended around 1, 500 violators. These violators were issued citation tickets and because they were “caught-in-the-act,” 180 of them will have their day in court as cases have already been filed against them. Atty. Joey Felizarta of Cenro is leading a no nonsense campaign of the city government for a gradual reduction of wastes thrown to the city’s multi-million sanitary landfill. Behind him … Continue reading Plastic-free Davao City

I wuz robbed!—DURIAN POST COLUMN

Switchboard By Roldan G. Gorgonio October 5 was World Teachers’ Day. Others marked the calendar red but for me, it was my worst day of the year. I was robbed. Burglars forced open the window near my kitchen door by slashing the window screen and took off with my Samsung plasma  TV and other valuables. DECA HOMES. Unsafe housing subdivision? I have heard numerous reports on stealing in Deca Homes in Davao City from police officers themselves who were there to respond, But these crimes remain unsolved. The robbers are still out there day and night looking for their next … Continue reading I wuz robbed!—DURIAN POST COLUMN

Urbanized organic agriculture

Switchboard by Roldan G. Gorgonio I took notice of the bright prospects of organic agriculture that if tapped by the government for revenue generation would spell economic salvation for many Filipinos, particularly the farmers. I said this having been part of the documentation team for the terminal report validation workshop for the Philippine Development Assistance Program (PDAP) with its “Promoting Rural Industries and Market Enhancement (PRIME)” project, partnered by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) held not so long ago at the Waterfront Hotel. As part of our job we took a quick look at the Sultan Kudarat Muscovado Farmers … Continue reading Urbanized organic agriculture

DAVAO CITY adopts new slogan – – “DAVAO: LIFE IS HERE”

SWITCHBOARD   BY ROLDAN GORGONIO Life is here! “Davao: Life is here” as the city’s new official slogan, tells it all…you want action, you come over and be part of it. In the aspect of tourism, the logo epitomizes what we have to offer to tourists. As a tool for investment generation, the slogan is simply tantalizing—making Davao like heaven on earth for investors. Taking the lead in promotion, Mayor Inday Sara Duterte has a new catchphrase with easy recall that Dabawenyos can truly call their own. “Life is here” is a great come-on, strikes at the very core of … Continue reading DAVAO CITY adopts new slogan – – “DAVAO: LIFE IS HERE”
